Frequently asked questions

What is HackViolet

HackViolet is a 24-hour female-empowerment hackathon with a specific mission to encourage all individuals to learn about and become change agents for the gender gap in technology by innovating and inspiring with code. A "hackathon" is an innovative event where teams work on developing technology projects in a limited period of time. Hackathons typically consist of workshops, activities, food, swag, and so much more to keep "hackers" engaged and fueled throughout the night!

What is our mission?

We strive to educate as many people as we can about the obstacles females and minorities face in computing and hope to inspire more unified action through our hackathon. Above all, we believe that people of all genders working together is key to creating an inclusive environment of mutual respect and encouragement. During the hackathon, our goal is to inform our diverse hackers about the history of women in technology, the stereotypes and biases that plague the industry, and the ways in which we can be change agents for a more inclusive culture. We hope that the workshops and activities we organize foster a supportive environment, where hackers of all genders encourage each other to reach their full potential.

Why are all genders allowed?

We strive to tackle the gender gap in technology with a different approach than typical all-female hackathons, because we believe in the value of involving non-females in these discussions and initiatives. At the same time, we maintain a majority female hackathon to provide a comfortable and open space to learn and innovate.

How will the event be held virtually?

Although HackViolet will be completely virtual this year, the experience will be even better than before! Our team is working hard to plan engaging events, connect hackers with companies and mentors, organize swag and food, and simulate the physical setting as best as possible.

Do I need to know how to code?

Absolutely not! We welcome participants of all skill levels and plan to have introductory workshops and activities to encourage all hackers to learn!

How will the hackathon be different with COVID-19?

Because of these unprecedented times and safety regulations, HackViolet will be completely virtual this time around. However, we plan to keep much of the event the same, if not more engaging than previous years! All communication will be executed via zoom, slack, and a virtual career fair setting.

When and where is HackViolet 2021?

HackViolet will be held from January 30 - 31, 2021 virtually with a 24-hour hacking period. More information, including the schedule, will be released closer to the event!

Who can attend HackViolet?

Any student enrolled in a high school, undergraduate, or graduate program! We welcome students of all genders, majors and backgrounds!

How can I register?

Registration is officially open! You can register at tinyurl.com/HackViolet
